Daffodil Glass Mosaic

Stephen Stelz, Stelz Studios, Flemington, NJ. American stained glass, late 20th century.

A beautifully executed glass mosaic by stained glass artist Stephen Stelz. This composition was created using glass made in the studio specifically for each piece. It is a one of a kind, and its graceful painterly composition demonstrates the expressive possibilities of opalescent glass reminiscent of the 19th century that few modern stained glass artists are able to duplicate today.

Steven Stelz

Stelz Studios was established in New Jersey in 1980, and Steven’s work consciously revived the stained glass traditions of Louis Comfort Tiffany and John LaFarge. He was recognized for his expertise in recreating Tiffany’s complex drapery glass, including work used in the restoration of an historic Tiffany window in Boston.

The studio specializes in restoration of period antiques, but is also known for producing original compositions using traditional techniques, including architectural windows, lamps, mosaics, and decorative panels. The artist is particularly known for his ability to produce the nearly lost glassmaking techniques of the Tiffany era. S

elf-taught, his craftsmanship in glass making, glass painting, and producing exquisite stained glass masterpieces is unparalleled in modern times. He possesses highly specialized technical knowledge relevant to the conservation of historically significant stained glass, as well as the eye of a true artist in producing original works of art.

In his spare time, he restores fossilized dinosaurs, ichthyosaurs, and other fossils on a massive scale.
